5,000 teachers opt for early retirement annually, says Deputy Education Minister

An average of 5,000 teachers opt for early retirement every year since 2022, mostly due to waning interest in the profession, Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh told the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (Aug 20).

To address the manpower gap, Wong said the ministry recruits teachers twice a year, while the Education Services Commission keeps applications open year-round.

Seven measures have also been introduced to ease workloads, including hiring non-teachers as SPM invigilators.
