Amended law gives Health DG wider powers on food safety breaches

Proposed amendments to the Food Act 1983 would give the Health director-general wider powers to publicise food safety violations and close premises handling food that is harmful to health, says Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.

He told the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Oct 8) that the Bill also strengthens controls on food contact materials, imported food declared for personal use and foreign food facilities, with offences carrying penalties of up to RM25,000, five years’ jail, or both.
