Child detention issues among possible amendments to Child Act, says Kula

A special committee has been set up to review Section 97 of the Child Act 2001, particularly concerns over the indefinite detention of children, says Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran.

Responding to Kesavan Subramaniam (PH-Sungai Siput) in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (July 7), Kulasegaran said the review became necessary after the abolition of the mandatory death penalty and life imprisonment in 2023, which introduced fixed prison terms for adults but not children.

He said the committee comprises representatives from relevant ministries, government agencies, legal bodies and child rights groups, including Human Rights Commission of Malaysia and UNICEF.
