Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad told the Dewan Rakyat on Monday that the government started reviewing the poverty line from March to give a truer picture of the poverty situation in the country.
He was replying to a question from Port Dickson MP Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on the government’s action following a report by the UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights Prof Philip Alston on Aug 23 that Malaysia’s rate of poverty was 16% to 20%, which was far off from the official figure of 0.4%.
