Fisheries Dept reports drop in illegal fishing, plans stricter penalties

The Fisheries Department has reported a slight decrease in illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing activities, including the intrusion of foreign vessels into national waters.
Speaking at the World Fisheries Day 2024 launch on Saturday (Nov 2), director-general Datuk Adnan Hussain noted that the department is working on amending the Fisheries Act 1985 to introduce stricter penalties and enhance measures to prevent such intrusions.
