Govt tightens law on cross-border child crimes

Malaysia is moving to strengthen its child offences law by allowing authorities to prosecute not only Malaysians but also permanent residents and individuals who ordinarily reside in the country for child offences committed overseas.

Tabling the Sexual Offences Against Children (Amendment) Bill 2026 for its second reading in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (June 29), Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the amendment to Section 3 would expand the Act's extra-territorial jurisdiction to address the increasingly cross-border nature of child crimes.

She added that the government would strengthen international cooperation and domestic coordination involving enforcement agencies, prosecutors, child protection authorities, cybersecurity agencies and communications regulators to ensure effective enforcement.
