Malaysians aged 65 and above are expected to account for more than 10% of the population within the next decade, prompting the government to step up preparations for an ageing society, says Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir.

Responding to Mohd Nazri Abu Hassan (PN-Merbok) in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (July 7), Akmal said the National Ageing White Paper will be tabled in 2027, followed by the National Ageing Blueprint 2025-2045 to guide long-term policies on healthcare, employment, social protection and elderly care.

Deputy Economy Minister Mohd Shahar Abdullah said the government is also working to expand the healthcare and social care workforce while increasing the use of technology and automation to better support the ageing population.
