Opposition flags concerns over bills to split AG-PP roles, urges readings to be postponed

The Opposition has called on the government to defer the proposed Bills to separate the roles of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor and to limit the Prime Minister’s term, citing concerns over accountability.

Opposition chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan argued that the proposed separation of powers fails to introduce meaningful checks and balances, as the wide discretionary powers currently held by the Attorney General under Article 145(3) would simply be transferred to the Public Prosecutor.

The Opposition also urged that the Public Prosecutor’s powers be made subject to judicial review to prevent unchecked authority.
