Rafizi: Car ownership issues could make low-income households miss out on petrol subsidies

The proposed levy system for implementing a targeted subsidy mechanism on RON95 petrol could exclude some of the poorest households from receiving assistance, says Rafizi Ramli.
During Minister’s Question Time in Parliament on Tuesday (Nov 12), the Economy Minister explained that around 40% of low-income households do not have vehicles registered in their names with the Road Transport Department (JPJ), which could prevent them from qualifying for the subsidy under the levy system.
Rafizi explained that the levy system is one of three proposals under consideration, though the government currently favors a two-tier pricing system, adding that the third option - direct cash payments to eligible individuals - raises concerns about potential price hikes and inflation.
