The government is being urged to redefine its classification of the high-income group to include only those earning above RM30,000 per month.

During Monday's (Oct 28) debate on the Supply Bill 2025 in the Dewan Rakyat, Sibu MP Oscar Ling proposed this adjustment in response to the government’s plan to remove subsidies for petrol, education, and public healthcare for high-income earners, arguing that the income threshold should be raised due to the rising cost of living and inflation.

Ling also called for a more tailored approach to the minimum wage across different regions, recommending a tiered structure with separate rates for urban, suburban, and rural areas to better reflect the economic conditions in each region.
