The Communications Ministry has stressed that the RM30mil Media Innovation Fund will not undermine media freedom, but is intended to strengthen the resilience of local media organisations amid challenges posed by the digital ecosystem.
Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching told the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday that the fund aims to support the digital transformation of local media, as shifts in the advertising landscape have seen revenue increasingly diverted to global platforms such as Google and Meta, squeezing traditional outlets.
She said the government’s intention was not to secure favourable coverage or loyalty, but to help local media remain relevant and competitive in the digital era.
