Sarawak has the potential to become a developed, high-income state by 2030, driven by the country’s stability and close cooperation between the Sarawak and Federal governments, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking at the Malaysia Day 2026 celebration in Kuching on Wednesday (Sept 16), Abang Johari said he welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s assurance that national development would be planned more evenly, taking into account the potential of Sarawak and Sabah.

He stressed that recognising the rights and special interests of Sabah and Sarawak should be part of the national agenda, adding that a more inclusive development approach could strengthen national unity.
