SST exemption on agricultural products depends on country-to-country negotiations, says Zafrul

Any move to waive the sales and service tax (SST) on agricultural imports from countries beyond the United States will depend on negotiations and reciprocal benefits for Malaysian companies, said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
Winding up debates on the 13th Malaysia Plan in Parliament on Tuesday (Aug 19), he said the SST exemption on US agricultural products was part of a deal that reduced retaliatory tariffs on Malaysia from 25% to 19%.
Responding to Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin (PN–Putrajaya), Zafrul stressed that Malaysia supports fair, just and non-discriminatory trade under World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules, but noted that many countries are prioritising domestic interests over multilateralism.
