Ock Hyun-ju was just in her first year as a reporter when the Sewol Ferry sank – a disaster that led to the death of 306 passengers, 250 of whom were high school students.

In the wake of the tragedy on April 16, 2014, Hyun-ju was quickly dispatched to report from the site and make sense of the chaos that was unfolding.

But competing with other reporters scrambling for exclusive content, aching with the guilt of having to ask grieving family members blunt questions and constantly needing to make quick judgment calls on what should and shouldn't be reported left Hyun-ju with many questions on the ethical challenges of reporting such a tragedy.
