A zoo in Bangkok, Thailand is receiving widespread condemnation for organising boxing matches featuring orangutans.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was quoted in a statement that animals become unhappy when trained to mimic humans, adding that they are subjected to punishments such as cigarette burns and electric shocks.
The head of New York-based International Fund for Animal Welfare said it is alarming that animal cruelty is exercised to give entertainment to humans.
Animal rights activists are calling for the show’s cancellation or for the zoo’s closure.
